The US Food and Drug Administration said that customs had previously detected radioactive isotope cesium-137 in containers at four ports in the United States. After investigation, they found this radioactive pollutant in a bread shrimp sample from an Indonesian company. Wal Mart's own brand Huiyi frozen shrimp comes from this company in part. The announcement stated that the level of cesium-137 detected in frozen bread shrimp was 68 becquerels per kilogram, far below the intervention standard of 1200 becquerels per kilogram set by the US Food and Drug Administration. But over time, low-level radiation may still cause health problems for consumers
Wal Mart said that it had immediately taken off the shelves and recalled three batches of Huiyi brand frozen shrimp, which were sold in 13 states across the United States. Wal Mart said it was cooperating with suppliers to investigate.
