The General Office of the National Health Commission recently issued the 2026 version of guidelines for the prevention and treatment of myopia, strabismus, and amblyopia, further improving the standardization level of myopia prevention and treatment as well as strabismus and amblyopia diagnosis and treatment.
In recent years, the prevalence of myopia in China has remained high and has become a major public health issue affecting the eye health of the population, especially children and adolescents. Epidemiological investigations have found that pathological myopia related retinal lesions have become one of the main causes of irreversible blindness in China.
The new version of the guidelines for myopia prevention and treatment proposes that starting from the neonatal period, children should receive eye care services at the prescribed frequency and adopt appropriate vision assessment methods based on age. Refractive screening should be conducted starting from the age of 24 months to detect common eye diseases, poor vision, and insufficient reserve for farsightedness in children at an early stage. Starting from the kindergarten stage, regular checks should be conducted on visual acuity, refractive power, axial length, and corneal curvature, as well as monitoring of fundus structure and assessing hyperopia reserve based on age. For children with a family history of high myopia, regular follow-up should be strengthened to focus on prevention and control.
Strabismus is a common eye disease that causes visual developmental disorders in children. Early treatment of strabismus can effectively correct eye position, restore appearance, promote visual development, and establish binocular vision function.
